PHNOM PENH, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia had imported 1.1 million
tons of petroleum in the first eight months of the year, a 3.5 percent
decrease compared with the 1.14 million tons over the same period last
year, the figures of the Ministry of Commerce showed Friday.
From January to August this year, the country had spent about 1. 04 billion U.S. dollars to purchase oil, down 7 percent from 1.12 billion dollars it paid over the same period last year.
A liter of premium gasoline goes for 1.35 dollars in Phnom Penh on Friday.
The country completely buys oil and gas from Vietnam, Singapore and Thailand as its seabed's oil and gas have not been exploited.
Cambodia is planning to build a 5 million tons oil refinery under the investment of Chinese firms, including China Development Bank, China Export and Credit Insurance Corporation, and China Perfect Machinery Industry Corporation.
The oil refinery project, estimated to cost 1.67 billion dollars, will be built on the 80-hectare area within the boundary of Preah Sihanouk province and Kampot province in Cambodia.
Cambodia's oil demand last year was 1.65 million tons. The Southeast Asian nation is expected to consume up to 4 million tons of oil a year in coming years due to rapid economic growth.
