Almost half of Cambodian households have access to electricity

 PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) -- Cambodia’s electricity sector made notable progress in 2013 in terms of its sources, connection lines, and supplies, according to the Cambodian Electricity Authority.
There was an increasing usage of 4297 million Kwh or 22 per cent in 2013 from 3527 million Kwh in 2012, according to a report, which was read by Mr Ti Norin, President of Electricity Authority at a meting. He claimed that almost half of the Cambodian households have access to the electricity.

Mr. Norin also said that this was the first time that the Government was able to supply the fast increasing needs for electricity. As construction of the power plants is underway under agreed investment agreements, Cambodia will be successful in sustaining enough power supply to all consummers from 2014 to 2017 onwards.

So far, electricity lines spread out over 1304 Km2 and there have been existing 17 power stations which are located in 13 provinces and cities. There will be further expansion to other provinces such as Kratie, Steung Treng, and Preah Sihanouk Province.

Presiding over the meeting, Suy Sem, Minister of Mines and Energy said that for the Government’s term of 2013 to 2018, the Ministry has set out 5 strategies, including keeping the balance and the demand for electricity, expanding dimension of electricity supply, enhancing fairness of supplying to rural areas, improving stability and quality of electricity supply and reducing consumption cost.
